Default Transmisson codes?

Sort of a newbee question, so bear with me. What type of transmission would a code "S1" on it be from? I recently purchased a s1 transmission and honestly don't know what type car did it come from? Would this transmission be suitable for "all motor N/A" applications?

Thanks in advanced, any info would be greatly appreciated!

S1 can either be of US or JDM spec.

US spec would be a from a 90-91 LS (long gearing)
JDM spec would be from an 89-91 B16A engine which has great short gearing, similar to that of hydro B16/96-99 ITR/CTR gearing.

Its hard to tell JDM vs US S1 tranny's though, unless, you take the casing apart and count the teeth on the ring gear.
