the car is a 98 civic LX 5 speed that is really stiff when toggling the shifter left and right in neutral and the same problem applies when putting the car in gear.
i seperated the shifter linkage from the transmission and inspected it along with the shifter the related parts. everything looks fine.
would this be a problem with the transmission?

When the linkage is separated from the transmission, does the lever move really free? If so, then it's gotta be in the tranny. Where else could it be?
If it's still really stiff, then look at lubrication at all the linkage pivots. Don't just visually inspect it, make sure it moves freely.
Otherwise if it's in the tranny, check the shaft that goes into the tranny for being bent??

yes, the shifter moves freely when seperated from the tranny and chassis.
if i'm not mistaken, the only lubrication point on the shifter and linkage is the grease on the shifter itself, on the ball that is, and the attachment to the linkage.
what shaft are you referring to that might be bent?

When you connect the linkage to the transmission, does it line up perfect? Or do you have to push it into place?
If the linkage moves freely when it's disconnected, & lines up properly, that kinda narrows it down to a transmission problem. (What else is there?) Maybe the shaft that actually enters the transmission case. I guess that would count as an internal problem...

everything lines up perfectly. if it is a transmission problem, what in the transmission itself would cause the shifter to be stiff and not be able to toggle left and right?
