Default Transmission grinds only when warm

My GSR tranny grinds 3rd gear but only when the car is at normal temperature, and above 4K RPM. I tried taking it to about 6K when it was cold, and it went in with no grinding. I assume it's because the fluid is cold so thats doing something inside. I'm using Honda MTF, and I just topped it off yesterday. Is there any other "thicker" fluid maybe I can run to prevent the grinding? Other than that the car runs great. Thanks.

First try changing the fluid. Topping it off did no good.

As you figured out, it grinds when the fluid is still cold and thick. My buddy with a B16 has the same problem. We tried friction modifier and everything -- nothing worked. We didn't try ATF however, and I heard that can fix the problem. It's just a notorious problem with B-series transmissions. Good luck. If you try the ATF, let me know how it goes.

It's a new swap so the fluid has been in for less than a month.

Try a 10-30 synthetic oil. Sometimes u get lucky but sometimes the only fix is a new syncro.

Yeah, it's possible that if it only does it in third that it could be your synchro. I would try out some of the suggestions in this thread first though before completely ruling everything else out.

My 2nd gear synchro is giving me grief lately. I have to be careful with my shifts or it grinds some of the time. Kind of annoying, and I really don't have the cash to pay for a new tranny or to have a new synchro put it, so I'm going easy on it for now.

Cool, what about Redline MTL? That's rated at 70W80. Would that be a better option then the 10w30?

70-80 is way to thick. Honda trannys are different than other gear boxes.
