Default Transmission Death

I guess this is the best forum to post this in.

My latest fling has been with this girl's 1989 Honda Accord. She came to me saying it was hard to change gears for a while, and then it got stuck in gear. She also said it was a 4 speed transmission...89 Accords don't come in 4 speed.

So the transmission comes out, and I get to tearing it down. Pictures are worth a thousand words, so I'll let them do the talking:

PICTURE DOWN

First one I ever got into that has that steel stamped end cap. 5th Gear set is under there.

PICTURE DOWN

Well, this is why she thought it was a 4 speed...5th gear is uhm...smooth.

PICTURE DOWN

Countershaft 5th gear...completely smooth. I'm still clueless as to what would cause this.

PICTURE DOWN

Another shot of the countershaft 5th gear.

PICTURE DOWN

Mainshaft 5th gear...not as smooth as its countershaft counterpart, but destroyed none the less.

PICTURE DOWN

Another shot of the mainshaft 5th gear.

PICTURE DOWN

Countershaft 3rd gear. My guess is somehow either 5th or 3rd went first then the broken teeth took out the other gear set.

PICTURE DOWN

Countershaft 3rd gear again.

PICTURE DOWN

More 3rd gear carnage.

PICTURE DOWN

I dug all these out from underneath the change holder. No wonder it was impossible for her to put it into gear.

PICTURE DOWN

A shot of everything. From bottom left going clockwise - countershaft 3rd gear, countershaft 5th gear, mainshaft 5th gear, gear teeth. Mainshaft 3rd gear is still on the shaft...I don't have my gear puller set with me right now, so i couldn't get it off.

So it's off to order parts...it's going to be about $250 in parts...either that or she can buy a used tranny for about the same price and I can combine good parts from the two.

Anyone have an idea as to how the teeth sheared off like that?

I've never seen gears in such poor condition. If I'm not mistaken, the gears are always touching... Wouldn't it be the synchros that would be finished? I really don't get it.

Dan GSR: the bearing would definitely explain it.

How does the bearing look anyway?

All bearings are in great shape. My first experience with a Honda transmission was when my ISB shattered and took out my mainshaft, clutch housing, and a few gears. I did get a nice D-Series clutch alignment tool out of it though.

My thoughts exactly...the gears are constantly meshed...I've seen mangled and destroyed synchros, but never destroyed gears without a bearing being the culprit.

My new hypothesis is oil starvation. I think someone ran the **** out of this transmission and never checked the oil level. 5th gear obviously went long ago, as seen by the surface hardening and discoloration on what used to be the gears. I think at some later point, some of the gear teeth from the destroyed 5th gear set made it back up into 3rd gear, ripping it apart, and all the teeth from 3rd settled under the change holder, locking the transmission into 4th.

When I opened the case, it smelled like oil-starved burnt metal.

Yeah, all the bearings are operating smoothly and with no noise, and surprisingly, all the synchros are still pointy. Reverse even looks good [this usually isn't the case].

I'm taking the gearsets to my Machine Design professor today...he worked in the industry in developing assembly processes and assembly system design, particularly automotive transmissions and engines. I figure he can give some insight as to what might have caused the failure.

Parts are ordered, I'll have pictures up of the reassembly when I get the parts in.

I cleaned everything up two days ago, and holy **** there were metal shavings EVERYWHERE...it took me 2 hours to clean all the parts out well. When I'm through this tranny should last a long time though!
