5th gear pull vs 4th gear, expert tuners wanted
Ok this is a big debate on another forum, which i am very involved in.
Heres the question. Is 5th gear actually more dangerous then 4th gear in an allotted period of boost. I mean is the only reason people blow their motors in 5th gear pulls because of the time they are in boost? Or does it have to do with the extra work of 5th gear.
Please make any response detailed, much appreciated. Please do not post if you don't know what your talking about.

yes i know the egts are the direct result of the engine failure. But I want to know why 5th gear is infamous for it.

In 5th gear, you are at each load site for more time. With a bad tune, the bad spots make themselves more apparent due to more time spent on each cell. In addition, you are asking the engine to do a lot more work by pushing the car through the air in 5th gear when compared to say, 3rd gear. If your car is tuned properly, there is no reason at all wht it wouldn't withstand a 1-5th gear pull to redline in every gear. Doing it 10 times may create a heatsoak problem but once should be fine.

Re: 5th gear pull vs 4th gear, expert tuners wanted (nfn15037)
There is a greater load placed on the motor. Try peddaling your bike from a dead stop in the tallest gear, you have to put a lot more force into your legs to get it moving. Same deal for your engine, it puts a lot more load on it. If you've had a truck lately, go read the manual. They all tell you to turn off OD or get out of fifth gear when you're towing, because a lot of them will knock with a heavy load and your tallest gear. Same reason why your turbo honda is more prone to detonation in fifth gear.

5th gear pulls on the highway or dyno? when nfn15037 was giving me my street tune we couldnt even find enough highway to hit boost in 5th

even if the car is tuned well, your egt's would still rise pretty quickly. and it's not like there's any reason to do long 5th gear pulls under boost anyways.

I believe 5th gear is harsher on the engine because it takes longer to accelerate therefore your on it longer. More load = Your foot pressing on the gas further.. when in higher gears you have to give it more gas than you would in a lower gear to get the same acceleration. <<<isn't a fact, just be putting my two cents on what i think happens. LOL

I agree. 5th gear was never meant for acceleration. It's for fuel economy.

Lol, H-T said the same thing HMT did, are you going to argue here also that there is a difference between load and resistance?

F*&^ That! 5th gears pulls all day! There's nothing more fun to me than hitting 150mph....maybe that's wreckless but I love it. 5th gear is for accerlation as long as you have enough power, hehe.....

Re: (jdmef-9)
Thing is with boosted cars you hit speeds in excess of 100mph sooo quick you are bound to use 5th gear all the time. In high/top speed runs your in 5th gear for soo much longer than other gears, so would be a waste for all these high HP boosted cars on the roads these days not to flex their muscle

Re: (swlabhot)
if tuned appropriately its fine. I've had people I've tuned come back and tell me how they were out trying to do a top speed run. while i never advise it, people have done it.
although i tend to tune 4th gear on the highway with occastion stabs in 5th so you can test out the pass a semi in 5th and not worry aobut downshifting.

Re: (seen4ever)
So why is it that when you buy a stock turbo car from the dealer there is NO caution or warning that "Boosting in 5th gear can cause catastrophic engine failure" from the manufacturer.
I'm not doubting that EGT's don't go up. But why on Hondas, in particular, and not on other cars like DSM's. I'm not new to this game but say what, you learn new things every day.

Re: (RA166E)
Look i don' believe there's different loads between each gear. It's just the difference in the amount of load you apply to the engine by using your foot and pressing on the gas. Basically you have to apply more gas (load) making your engine work harder in 5th to get the same amount of acceleration found in any other gear. I hope i worded what i thought right. lol.

If load is the same in every gear than explain why some people can barely get boost in 1st gear but have no problems in 2nd or 3rd?
