Tranny rebuilders... any thoughts?
Guys, I am doing a rebuild on my tranny for the first time, and Ive run into something that I didnt expect, and dont quite understand...
I have this "scoring" on the bearing that the countershaft sits in. Its bretty bad, but Im not sure what caused it, or how I can keep it from happening again... my best theory is that something got into the bearing/gear and got chewed up and spread out...
anybody got any ideas on this one???

How's the differential pinion gear look on the bottom?
What about the countershaft bearing at the top of the shaft with the retaining clip groove? And, also what about the retaining clip and the part of the casing that it's recessed into?

the pinion gear is a bit rough on the edges, I havent had time to look into the clip or the groove yet... but the scoring is larger than the pinion gears diameter, its really wierd...
It looks like you may have a countershaft top bearing failure/clip that allowed the shaft to move into the bearing. Also the retainer that holds the bearing in place on the bottom end may have been absent as well. Just my speculations
any speculations are good, because I dont have any good ideas here...
What retainer are you referring to? are you talking about the steel clip that holds it in place with the one 12mm? so you think that the beriang may have pulled out a bit?
I am guessing here too, but I just dont know what to replace to fix it.

I would replace that bearing. If you look on the right hand side where the 4 score marks are the retainig clip appears to have a gouge(sp?). I would just replace it for the peace of mind. It would suck to put it back together and the thing whine, or worse fall apart and damge the counter shaft.

well, I plan to replace most, if not all, of the bearings anyways, so that isnt a problem. The clip and groove look okay, but I need to investigate them a little closer. I just wonder if the tranny is okay, but maybe the extreme forces that are applied to it are making things flex and rub in strange places....
I mean Im not exactly baby-ing the tranny, and the car makes really good power through a tilton twin disc. maybe Im just hitting it too hard and it doesnt like it.
