Default Tranny Problem

Yesterday it had snowed a couple of inches here. I was driving my Accord, in second gear. I was spinning and I shifted the spin. With the clutch completely pressed it, shifting into third, it made this huge grind. I've never heard a grind like this. I also want to mention, this was a quick shift so all my power was thrown into the shift. The car doesn't go into 4th gear anymore. Can it be I bent the 3-4th gear shift forks? Or even worse, completely destroyed the syncros? Just trying to get an idea before I open up the tranny. It's a 2001 Accord, 2.3L. Thanks for looking.

Couple of things to add to it. It shifts into third fine, no grinding or anything. Which is why i dont' believe it can be the syncros. It just doesnt' go into 4th. It stops in neutral when pulling down on the shifter and doesn't allow me to push the shift further than neutral.

Could be either, but I'd lean more towards the 3rd-4th synchro set. The synchro sleeves are usually the second or first thing to go, next to the input shaft bearing when transmissions break.

Regardless, you'll have to open the transmission to look. The only difference is that replacing the synchro set requires a little more work than simply replacing a shift fork.

The synchro sleeve should be able to move all the way up and down to engage the little teeth on the gears of both 3rd (down) and 4th (up).

No matter which single item you replace, check the synchro sleeve-to-shift fork clearance. It could call for the other item to be replaced if the clearance falls out of service limit spec.
