tranny inspection
Yeah you can take the trans apart. Seriously though, there's no way to check the synchro condition of a trans unless you can spin the input shaft fast enough. You can manually shift the transmission out of the car but at zero rpm, it won't tell you a thing about how it shifts at speed.
i know this is an old thread, but i have actually taken the time to bust apart the EX tranny to check the internals. there arent any metal shavings anywhere, except a very small amount by the magnet in the bottom. all bearing seem to roll smooth, and i cannot see any obvious damage other than a very slight groove through the center of the teeth on all of the gears. is this normal? any info is appreciated.
The groove or notch along all the teethe are normal. Have a look at the synchro rings. They're the smaller gold rings that accompany each gear. Make sure the teeth aren't too rounded (a sign that it has been shifted hard) and that no teeth are broken off. The main gears should have minimal wear since they're in constant mesh. It's the synchro rings that take the beating.
