Well since you don't drive it hard, you should change to synthetic, but not redline, it's designed to fast ranning transmissions. Well, 5-sp trannies.

Anyway, find a decent synthetic ATF and change if you want, but if it is clean, then there is no need.

Use Honda ATF- it is more durable now . However- honda autos need their fluid changed at least every 30k. If it was mine I'd do it every 15K. The amount of silver gunk you found on the drain plug is clutch pack material. I have yet to see any other fluid provide as smooth of a shift as Honda fluid.

What do you recommend for 5-sp trannies. Does honda make Synthetic tranny fluid?

ooooh, i know i'm gonna get beat down for disagreeing with a moderator. i think it's definitely worth the extra couple bucks (come on, it's only a couple more bucks every 15k miles) to get the honda fluids. i know they're manual transmission fluid is formulated differently then just standard oil (which is what's usually used) and i know that it makes a definite difference. i drive a 5th gen prelude, which are notorious for they're weak transmissions, and you can tell the it goes through the gates easier with honda mtf. check the prelude forum, using the honda stuff does make a difference. i don't know about their automatic fluid, but i do know that it's formualted differently then other stuff, and i would definitely use it if i had automatic.

Honda does not manufacture their fluids- rather they provide formulas for companies like Mobile to mix them. Honda manual trans fluid works better than standad 10w30. I have not tried redline or others. I do know that Honda ATF is GOOD stuff and provides the best shift quality. Also- I have seen Honda manual trans fluid make noisy input shaft bearings quiet common on 92-95 civics.

I have not seen a Fram Honda oil filter- I have seen Filtech, Toyo Roki, and a non branded Canadian filter. The Toyo Roki's come from Japan and the Filtech's are made here. The Candian model will feel really light and cheap when you hold it (go figure- its from Canada).
