Default tranny casing bolts and snap ring?

ok this weekend i tore apart my new y80 gsr tranny to inspect and it was fine.. but when i was putting it back together is were i ran into some problems: first off i couldnt get the snap ring at the top to seat in the void on the bearing casing (just sitting like 1mm above the slot) so i thought i would just tighten the casing bolts and it would pull it down so i was tightening the bolts down (in criss cross pattern). then when i began to torque them to 20 ft-lbs two of them snapped??? wtf did i do wrong besides the snap ring thingy???? could it be the type and amount of liquid gasket or am i just that retarded???
oh yeah i tried doing like the helms said with the snap ring and snap ring pliers
PLEASE HELP ME I NEED TO PUT IT IN THIS WEEKEND
thanks sooo much guys

pull it apart again, get new bolts. when you put the casing in make sure its aligned and straight; if not it'll get stuck, remember to open the snap ring.If when the casing is ALL the way seated the snap ring its not in its groove, but right on top of it, torque the bolts in order and then pic it up, turn it around and hit it a little (where the ring is)against the floor(put a block of wood there so it dont hit the floor).
works like a charm.Look at the ring and it'll be seated.

The tried and true method is to install the case over the main/jack shaft. Hold the snap ring open and slide it over the end of the mainshaft. Install a few bolts to finger tightness and then flip the whole tranny over and LIGHTLY bump it against a block of wood. You should hear the main shaft fall into place and the ring snap into its groove on the shaft. It takes a few times to get the hang of it but thats the trick. (you need to do it fairly quickly also before the hondabond sets)

Or just lift slightly with a small pry bar after bolting the case together........takes like what......5 seconds?

You are saying pry the bearing up so the ring sets? You don't even need to bolt the case together to do that, right?

Thanks

You are supposed to bolt the case together and torque to spec before lifting that shaft and locking it into place. After bolting everything together, I just insert my smallest prybar (6") through the 40mm service plug hole and into the snap ring groove and pry up. It locks into place very easily.

To be breaking the bolts you obviously didn't have the case fully seated. The case should drop down fully together. If it was hanging up you must have been hung up on one of the shifter forks or on the end of the input shaft. Be carefull with the input shaft, there is a small finger on the end that has to be rotated to the exact right position to lock into the tranny case.

thanks guys for the replies and the dropping thing worked really well, bu i have another problem. i put the case back on, it all went smooth then i checked the spindle and it wouldn't spin. i took it back apart to see what it was but i don't really know what it could be, besides the little finger thing on the input shaft. whats the best way to align that properly because that i most likely the problem...
thanks again

Make sure that you torqued the tranny case bolts correctly. If they are too tight they will lock the diff in place and you'll be sad. The diff to 72mm shim spacing on the tranny case is very important.

Any way you can take a picture of what you are talking about?
If it is the tab on the top of the input shaft I'm not sure how you managed to torque down the case since I think it has to be in the correct location to get the case on.
With the tab, check out where the tab should go in on the tranny casing, then use the bolt holes as reference points so you know what direction to set the tab.

Also- even though you have the case torqued down correctly you may still need to verify clearance on the 72mm shim.

tried all the tricks- plastic hammer on the case, dropped the tranny on the floor, lifted the countershaft with a screwdriver. The ring goes around the bearing but it's about the thickness of the snap ring from getting into the groove in the bearing.
Anyone have any other ideas? The tang is lined up correctly, the cases are flush together- I can finger tighten the case together with no problems.
Would any particular pics help?? I'm giving up hope!!!!

Thanks
Ben

first picture...the two shafts don't look level

did you try taking out the two shafts....and re installing them......

also...is the notch on the washer/shim on the main shaft lined up with the tranny casing?

fixed- the bearing seat in the tranny case had a burr in it preventing the countershaft from going all the way up. Just dremel'd it out and it went in like a charm.
Prying with a screwdriver worked like a charm.

Thanks again

Yea that little tab that goes on the end of the bearing needs to be pointed towards the starter ...check inside empty side of the tranny case to make sure its aligned right ..
the snap ring is ez of course and you can open that up and it should clam that together no prob

Does any of that stuff apply to 88-91 JDM cable trannies? I can't get the top casing of my J1 tranny to seat right against the bottom casing, and I don't see anything to align. I've tried leaving it in 4th gear (I read that in another thread) and in neutral but the casing will just not seat all the way down...
