I've been using my friends tools for the longest time. Its finally time for me to get some for myself. Sears is having some great sales on their toolsets. Do you guys recomend any of them? I'm not sure which ones are too much.
if you look inside the socket, the 6 point socket has 6 sides inside, and the 12 point has 12 sides inside. a 12 point socket is easier to get on a bolt the first time, but it does contact with as much surface area so it's easier to round the bolt. definitely get 6 point sockets.
i usually get my tools at sears as well, but home depot has a husky (about equal with craftsman) metric socket set that goes from 4mm to 13mm in 1/4, and 10mm to 19mm in 3/8, two extensions, a 3/8 rachet, and a spark plug socket that fits hondas for about $35, and it all comes in a decent case. i use mine all the time, one of my best buys.
i'd suggest picking up a 1/4 rachet as well. you'd be surpised how useful they are for tight spots. also, i don't like craftsman screwdrivers at all. i highly recommend buying snap-on screwdrivers.
make sure to pick up a torque wrench as well!

I got the $300 set of tools from Sears about 10 years ago and I have to say that is probably the best money I have ever spent. I only had a couple problems, and I just took the broken tools in and they exchanged them. I still have most of them, some of them got "borrowed" by coworkers and never returned. But that is a great base of tools, then when you are going to do something, buy the tools you need and you will gradually build up a nice collection. Are there certain things you are thinking about doing? Or just in general?

the first thing on my project list is to replace a headgasket, but basically I want to be able to take apart the whole engine and put it back together (working
)
Eventually I would like to pull of my transmission for fun.

Definitely go to Sears. They have sales in their tool department all the time. I just recently picked up a 251 piece tool set with a free tool box for $199. You can't smote that. Comes with metric/standard open ended wrenches, 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, and 1/2 inch ratchets and sockets, with loads of extensions.
I took apart a whole motor with it no problem, finished a swap with it, and am going to start on my head gasket in a few minutes.

if you are going to try to take apart the whole motor make sure you get a 17mm that is 12point instead of 6 because the flywheel is a 12 point bolt ...the clutch bolts are also 12 point i think they are 10 or 12mm but i cant remember for sure

truck tools[mac spap on matco ect. ] are good if you work at a shop but if you dontand break one then you have to ups them back for a replacement and that sucks big time.. even if you do work at shop the tool trucks only come by once a week..
Here's what the 256 Mechanics Set comes with (off the top of my head may have some more parts)-
1/4 Drive: Ratchet- standard and metric 6 point, standard and metric 12 point, extensions
3/8 Drive: Ratchet- standard and metric 6 point and 12 point, Deep sockets for standard and metric, Spark Plug sockets, extensions, a set of 8 point sockets too
1/2 Drive: Ratchet- standard and metric 12 point, extensions
Standard and Metric Wrenchs and Allen wrenchs. Few other small things and a plastic tool box that holds them all.
All that for $200
