Default timing issue, need a pro on this one

Got a h22a in my hatch and the cam gears wouldnt line up TDC. I have a STR cam gear on the intake side and a stock on the exhaust side. The STR gear would either be to far forward by a tin bit or to far back a tiny bit. It ran descent with the gear to far toward the fire wall but the rpm's would rop to 300 and go right back up to 700-800. I adjusted the gear to TDC and it ran a little rougher. Almost stalling when the rpm's would drop. If I turn the distributer retard all the way it would smooth out the rpm's.

I found out that the STR cam gear is just a bit smaller then the stock so Im assuming thats why the gear was off. Anyways anyone ever have this prob or know what the deal is? Need help bad cause Im broke now and have tried everything but pay out the hard cash to get the car diagnosed. Please help, thanx

Sounds like to me you are off about a tooth. Make sure you line up the crank to TDC and than the cams to TDC. Put a couple of dowels in the cams to keep them straight and install the belt.
