Timing or fueling?
Car is JDM EG9 Ferio with JDM B16a with Y21 hydro gearbox non LSD. Still has AC, PS.
Mods include:
Intake
4-2-1 headers with 2.25" mandrel bent exhaust with N1 muffler.
Enlarged T/B
Ported and polished head.
2 layer head gasket.
VAFC with stock settings.
Short shifter.
Im running about 10.7:1 compression and I run the equivalent of 91 octane for you guys in the states.
Here is my problem. I put the car in first and hit the gas and the car feels very unresponsive and slugs. It feels bogged down till the rpms rise up then it takes off. Then when I shift to second it does the same thing. sluggish then back to normal. I think its timing problem or do you think it could be due to fueling problems? Rich or lean?
As i said before, up in the high RPM's and in VTEC the car runs sweet. In it's current state i have run a 15.578 @ 90.12 MPH 1/4 mile. This is with a 2.496 second 60ft time due to slippery conditions and street tires. 1/8th mile is 10.154 @ 71.35 MPH car is running street trim with only spare tire and tools taken out.

Yeah i have a feeling that it's running rich as it backfires a bit under decelleration. But what I don't get is when my car is running at WOT i can hear a bit of pinging at around 4000rpm. This is confusing me because if im running rich, it is less likely to detonate right? And im suspecting the timing is a little too much retarded so I dont know why im getting detonation. Im using the highest grade octane fuel in New Zealand which is 98 octane (although i heard that is the equivalent of 91 octane in the USA).
Best bet is to throw the car on the dyno to check out my A/F ratios.

are you running a reprogrammed ecu at all?
getting any check engine lights?
perhaps your VAFC isn't setup correctly, which is tripping out the MAP sensor and the cause of your acceleration hesitation problem..
change your cams recently? perhaps you messed up when putting the timing belt back on at TDC and your off a tooth......which would cause the car to run boggy/rich/and hesitate on acceleration...
just some suggestions..

Nope stock P30 with VAFC on stock settings.

. Definately not a tooth off as i can still run mid 15 second quarters. Just that its a bit sluggish down low.

Confirm your timing with a timing light (easy), if that is bang on and you still have the same problem then go out and get a fuel pressure gague and check that. You are into the basics of how the motor runs. You could have a spark (timing), fuel, or air problem. Just take your time and do things step by step.

I had the same problem. Mine would backfire every now and then, "expecially when coming off throttle back into neutral". I was messin around with my ignition components, IE: cap, rotor, plugs, wires, coil.... My rotor was messed up, and I tested my coil and it came out below the values suggested in my haynes manual. I changed that out and it ran like ****! Well, duh! I probally messed up my firing order. So changed it and it ran badass.
if your misfiring, it's because your either not burning the fuel, or aren't getting the fuel to burn. Check ignition components, do a fuel pressure test "unless you have a gauge". and check to see for vacuum leaks.

Nah its definately not missing. I'm pretty confident its the a/f ratio or the timing. Maybe i need to change my fuel filter. I've driven my friends EK4 with a B16a with I/H/E and the low end is quite responsive and feels quite "nippy" while i can describe my low end to be quite "dull"
