Default Timing Belt Problem...

Well I bought my car about two weeks ago, and it had a strange tapping noise. Well I finally figured out what the noise was, when the car broke down on me yesterday.

Anyway, the car is a 1998 Hatch DX. And I was checking the timing and found that it was off. So, I was checking out the timing belt and it was looser than I thought it should be. Well, I finally figured out that the gear on the crankshaft for the timing belt has rotational play in it, like it broke the key off or something.

I havent taken the lower timing belt cover off yet, but I just wanted to see if anyone has had any problems like this before.
