is there a way to run a compression check or something on an engine that has been removed from a car?

I am looking at buying an engine, but its already been pulled. just wondering if there is anythign I can check besides a hole in the block.

 

u could crank the motor manually from the crank pulley bolt

 

Leakdown test. Also check the spark plugs for signs of detonation.

 

i don't think I could spin the crank by hand fast enough to get an accurate compression test.

can i use the compression tester for the leakdown?

 

No, you need a leakdown tester.

 

if the tranny is on and the starter is there then hotwire the starter and crank it over. pull all the plugs and hold the throttle open. it wont read as high cold but it will let you know if theres any variation

 

if they didnt drain the oil check that, pull the valve cover check the t belt, and the cams for wear and how clean the head is.
