Default tech gurus need some help

driving on the 405 yesterday speedo takes a **** and drops to 0, mileage reading stops ect... get off the exit check the VSS to see if its unplugged, seemed fine to me. took out my cluster to check if it was a lose wire.checked out fine too. so i continue to drive. get to my destination. 45-60 minslater, tach goes dead all intertior lights ect go dead then the car dies. so i compression start it make it to shucks and buy a new battery(since the old one had no charge at all). and my car is throwing a cel 17 (VSS). keep in mind i had just changed my altenator 2 weeks ago. aynone know what can be the cause of all these wierd things are they all connected some how. i read somewhere that there is a VSS fuse and it is connected to the altenator could the fuse have blown and caused the altenator to stop working resulting in a dead battery?

PS: sorry if this was hard to understand wrote it in a hurry
