honda-tech guru's need some help
driving on the 405 yesterday speedo takes a **** and drops to 0, mileage reading stops ect... get off the exit check the VSS to see if its unplugged, seemed fine to me. took out my cluster to check if it was a lose wire.checked out fine too. so i continue to drive. get to my destination. 45-60 minslater, tach goes dead all intertior lights ect go dead then the car dies. so i compression start it make it to shucks and buy a new battery(since the old one had no charge at all). and my car is throwing a cel 17 (VSS). keep in mind i had just changed my altenator 2 weeks ago. aynone know what can be the cause of all these wierd things are they all connected some how. i read somewhere that there is a VSS fuse and it is connected to the altenator could the fuse have blown and caused the altenator to stop working resulting in a dead battery?
PS: sorry if this was hard to understand wrote it in a hurry

Couldnt be the alternator if the battery was dead and the car was still able to drive. Sounds like maybe a short somewhere.

there is an alternator fuse on the OBD2 cars under the dash. I would look into that first
Happened on my roomate;s ITR and a friends 00 EK.....
The VSS problem could just be a coincidence and possibly a corroded connection...like mine

I had the same exact problem. I bet if you take the VSS plug off and look in it, there will corrosion. I used some electronics part cleaner and a micro brush and cleaned up the plug and it worked fine after that.

He said the car and all electronics inside died. So that means there was no electricity provided to the car via the alternator. So since the alternator was just replaced it is something between the alternator and the battery that isn't working properly. I would check your voltage regulator(just in case it was damaged while installing the new alternator) and also battery cables, connections, alternator connections, make sure all grounds are clean and sufficient. Also check all of your fuses.

Usually, when the alternator takes a dump, you loose power gradually and your engine starts to hesitate...
In your case, the speedo died, the car ran fine, then all your electricals conked out...
So, i think you have a short, blown fusible link or something somewhere... How much mileage do you have on the car?
You lost power to the VSS first... That would account for the speedo, but, then all your electricals died and your starter did not turn... check connections from starter solenoid to your ignition switch.
Did you have power to the radio? How about headlights?

Re: honda-tech guru's need some help (filthy_shovel)
the radio was dead, not sure about the headlights. car ran fine when this was happening, the idle went up to about 1200rpm the car was just running but nothing in the car was working. im kinda stumped on where to start. im gonna check the fuses first and go from there

sounds like to me 2 seperate problems
VSS and alternator
take the car/alternator to autozone, they will check it.

Re: honda-tech guru's need some help (Kamin)
Update:
Fixed problem today. ended up being a blown Alt/sp fuse 7.5 amp in the underdash fuse box for future reference. car is back to normal and i found out why the Idle spiked to 1500rpm it was a vacum leak.
thanks for all the help guys
