okay i was wondering, should i get a new distributor sub assembly and new rotor? or should i just go ahead and get a new rotor? i have a msd distributor cap will i need a new one of those, the check engine light doesnt always come on wutz up with that?
You could check the wiring, because it might not be the sensor itself. But the TDC sensor isn't the rotor. Putting in a new rotor isn't a bad thing, but how is it gonna fix your TDC sensor?
Who said the right way to fix a car is cheap? The TDC sensor is in the distributor, and the only way to get a new one is to get the sub-assembly. Make sure you use a new rotor because it may be melted. The most common reason the sensor fails is because the bearing in the dist is seizing and overheating which overheats everything else attached to the shaft, inluding the sensors and the rotor.
First off I would grab a digital multimeter and continuity test your TDC P and TDC M wires from your ECU pigtails out to your engine harnesses dizzy connector... If you've run the car prior to this with no problems (as in you haven't just done the swap and had to play with your top dead wiring) then I wouldn't be to worried about polarity... If you had the wires backwards then the car would have a code, but it wouldn't have ever run smooth... As long as you got continuity over each wire you're wiring is good... If you have a friend that you could possibly borrow another dizzy from that is the easiest test... I'm guessing that if all your wiring is cool that another GOOD dizzy will rid you of your lovely code 8... If I ever have problems with individual distributor sensors then I normally just jack whatever it may be (CYP/CKP/TDC) out of another bad distributor... I would atleast try to find someone selling a bad distributor first, it's just a lot cheaper than buying a brand new sub assembly... Good Luck with whatever you end up doing... Latez
