Synchro or shift fork?
on my s20 tranny for my d16z6, i have recently been experiencing some grinding going from 2nd to 3rd. i have heard many say this is a common problem for hondas, and most pple diagnose it as a possible synchro problem, but i was wondering if it could just be the shift fork? this sound only started recently, and i have tried waiting for my clutch to become fully depressed and do a smooth perfect shift and get it into 3rd before i even start to let go of the clutch, but it still grinds a lil. the sound is very minor right now, more of a quick crack sound.
which would be more expensive or more labor? replacing the syncro or the shift fork? i am gonna change my tranny fluid soon anyway cuz i've been using mobil 1 MTF and i have heard alotta of people say they aren't that good for hondas. hopefully that will make it go away if i'm lucky, but in the meantime, what do you all think?

shift fork is harder to replace. trust me. especially on the cable d-series. i replaced 2 shift forks in a 91 CRX Si tranny this weekend. there was 2 bitch pins that had to come out of the shift fork assy, and then multiple springs and *****. not sure about hydro. B series are easy to do though.
Most probable cause is your 3rd gear syncro. the 3-4 syncro set is on the mainstack, and easy to replace once the top half of the case is off. takes me about 45 mins to disassemble/replace/reassemble.
I'd buy the hub, sleeve, and 2 blocking rings. I think they might come as a a set. Or ask mistabone if he has some good used ones he'd sell.

i've heard that its not a good idea to run full synthetic oil in a transmission.. something about the oil being too slippery and not having enough friction (or whatever the force is) to stick to the metal, thus causing underoiling and premature damage.
BTW, it sounds like a synchro. Shift forks rarely bend or anything liek that, they usually just snap off from banging the gears too hard

From what I have heard the best fluid for the trans. is the stock Honda MTL. As for the sound it does sound like a synchro is going. Try the fluid and see what it does.

true, they are cast aluminum. But they don't bend, that I've seen. they break (crack, snap) due to the low elasticity of cast material. I should post pics of the ones I replaced this weekend... pieces of the 1-2 and 3-4 forks were snapped off laying in the bottom of the tranny.
Short shifters don't make your car faster...
