ive had this idle problem for months now in my hatch, when i put my finger on the hold in the TB, the idle goes to 1,000k and it has suction, at start up when car is cold it idles at 3,000k and after a few minutes it starts jumping up and down from 2k to 3k. sometimes when i get off the freeway after a long drive, the idle stays constant at 2k. now my question is which valve do i have to change, the fast idle or the idle air control valve??? please help

i dunno if it was mentioned previously, but other causes for such an idle could be-

air gaps in coolant, requires a good bleed

TPS could be out of spec

I have found that an easy way to clean the IACV is carb cleaner, however, they can go bad, so if you have another or a friend who has another, try that out too as part of the troubleshoot...

Note- some tb's do not have FITV and someone mentioned jsut accessing via the plate on the bottom- this is correct. undo the plate, and tighten the plastic screw if it is very loose.

Something to note: The hose nearest to the firewall doesn't need to be removed. It is connected to the throttle body which sends/recieves coolant through the fitv. The hose connected directly to the valve may be removed but I didn't have to disconnect anything.

can someone do a little write up for a d16y8 motor. been having this surging/bogging idle problem for a while now. so this is my last resort for trying to fix it. already flushed/bleed the radiator, clean fuel injectors, clean air filter, new fuel filter, new plugs and wires and etc. i took off my intake and covered the hole and the car died on me. i don't know what else to do cause the write up was for a b16 motor so i don't know where the parts are for the d16y8 motor. would appreciate it if someone with the same motor as me told me what to do.

im not sure if there is a difference in the motors, but on my b16a i just fixed my idle problem, i took off the fast idle (FITV) and re-screwed in that thing that gets loose. fixed my idle.

Nice write-up. I wouldn't mind seeing it stickied too. How many posts PER WEEK about 'my idle is screwed up'...?

But you might want to say way upfront, how newer engines (OBD-2?) don't have an FITV. It's job was incorporated into the AICV. I didn't find these 2 notes until I read way down thru all the responses.

Just fix my 92 accord idle surge in five minutes without unbolting anything. just move the throttle cable to the side remove the two screws on the cap of the FITV and tighted the plastic piece as stated. replace the cap, screws, throttle cable and blam no more surge. Helped alot thanks!!!!!!

Thank you very much for the great write up!! I just finished doing this and it fixed the idle problem. I simply just pulled off the FITV and tightened the plastic thing and put it back on. Worked well and no more surge. My car is a 94 Civic EX by the way.
