Default Stupid question, needs intelligent answer :P

I know this sounds really stupid, but im french so i dont know all those english terms.. Whats the difference between Closed Deck and Open deck?
Heard about it while getting info on H22 engine..
any help would be gladly appreciated!!

Not a dumb question if you're yearning for knowledge.

Most-all Honda engines are 'open deck'.
Here's a picture of B-series 'open deck' block:



Notice the open trench area surrounding the cylinder walls? That's what makes a Honda motor 'open deck'. Coolant resides in that surrounding trench.

closed deck is seen here (no surrounding trench):

Closed decks are more stable because the top of the cylinders have support, instead of being open. But, you can make a Honda block a somewhat closed deck by purchasing one of these cylinder plates:


This only needed if your making big power with your engine though (turbo).

One more thing about the design. Honda engines were designed with an open deck for a big increase in cooling efficiency. This allows the car to be lighter by using less block material and using a smaller radiator.
