Default A stroked D16...Is this a possibility?

Okay Did a search and found nothing so here goes...Is it possible to stroke a d16 engine ( say a d16a6 for instance)? The reason I ask is I came across Spades sohc post and was wondering what potential this engine has. Since I have the 62hp
fuel sipping d15 engine anything would be an improvement. Any insight would be welcome.

TIA

Chuck

Virtually none, when compared to a B series motor. If you want to strap on a turbo, fine, but don't waste money trying to make an NA D series. Though there's always someone who makes a boring engine make good power, after examining how much money they've spent it always works out to be more beneficial to swap it and start with something worthwhile.

saying to not build a D series is like saying not to build up a H22 in a prelude body since its too heavy. just because its not the norm doesnt mean its inferior.

<--- raced a CRX with a D16 nonvtec for 3 years. Total investment $1500.00 on the motor. timeslips.. consistent 13.6's. stock block. unmilled head. ALL MOTOR.

AEBS Racing http://www.aebsracing.com/p21.html and R&D (no website and cannot find the phone number) both have forged D series crank blanks that you can have stroked to any spec that you need (within reason)

Is it cheap? Hell no. But then again, internals on any engine are not cheap. Especially custom.

Ok, so is the D superior to an equivalent displacement B series motor then? Modification for modification, is your D motor going to outperform the B in most situations? IMHO this is not the case, hence suggesting that one forego the buildup on that platform and start out with something more performance oriented from the factory. Also, could you provide at least some detailed information about your old drag car? Such as how much it weighed, how much power it made, and what setup you ran on the strip? Because the only people I've known that have gotten D series powerplants to push them into the 13's for that little money were either driving tin cans resembling Hondas or spent significantly more than $1500.

texan: if you are comparing mod to mod on the b and d, yes the B will mort likely outperform the D. But as far as $$ amt goes, you may have spent way more than for the B stuff or even just getting to putting a B motor in. Im not knockin on the B series. we like to build them whether its b, d, f, K , or H series. our goal is 10s all motor on all the blocks no matter what it takes. the only reason I defend the D series, is becuase there are alot of people out there that are on a limited budget and wish to have a b series but in their situation, would never be able to afford all the b series upgrades. So I dont want them left out of the fun just because by popularity B series is the "in thing" to have. Let them have fun with the D as well.

Gotta jam but jus a quick summary of what my car had. yes it was pretty much gutted out as far as interior. i mean honestly.. interior probably weighs only like 75lbs the most. no fiberglass pieces at all. no cutting of any metal. stock doors. on 14x8 slicks and drag race suspension for the track.
car was daily driven for 3 years. daily avg miles driven=120-15/miles day. 35MPG. 91 octane.

In that case I agree with you. My personal preference leans heavily towards a B16A swap in this case, but I don't know how much he has to spend. An old JDM B16A w/trans can be had for around $1200 and would have a 100hp advantage over his D15, this weekend I'll be tooling around in a B16 CRX and guess I'll know exactly how well a stock one works in this chassis.

BTW exo, that is a pretty good time for a D16 in that car, congrats

ya to me: back in the day.. I knew I couldnt drop money into a B16 and have more money to spend another 2-3K on modifications.

So I used what I had... not only did it make me think more and plan more on my setup.. it was fun since alot of research was done and it wasnt so "Formula" to get a fast car.

R&D dyno sells stroker kits for D motors (rddyno.com). No personal experience with them, so go at your own risk. Thier top d-motors are 2.0L and carb'd. Not streetable, but a more modest setup would work. Stroking to ~1.8L would cost as much as a B16A swap, but would be undeniably sweet.
To all who hate on D-motors, sit down and shut up. First of all, its not your car. Second of all, its not your money. If everyone went the cheapest route to a fast car we'd all drive fox-body mustangs. The very idea of fixing up your car is to make it exactly what YOU want it to be. If he wants to go d, thats his choice. If its built properly and installed in a decently light chassis, it will be a good performer.

BTW, as for how much it would cost, the V8 guys find it very funny when they see a Civic with $5K under the hood running 13s (say swap and bolt-ons...) 5K on a Z28 can put in in the 10s with ease. Just to give a little perspective.

i like the d series strictly because of the attitude everyone has toward them, its a worthwhile effort for me to see how people respond to a tiny motor like the a6. I could go with the b but i'd have to ditch my 4wd and instead of spending 1500 on a swap i can spend that 1500 on having a well built d series. and http://www.crower.com has stroker kits as well

what do you think about boring it to 1.8 and putting CTR or R pistons in it

Thanks for all the responses....Yes money is a concern during the current economic climate ( i'm glad to still have a job to go to every day). I too wanted to do B-series but then i thought about it..I would be purchasing a motor with a questionable background, that may or may not start up once installed and would surely have me on pins and needles waiting for something to fail. I dont hate on the b-series guys...much love to all,I just wanted to try something different.

Exospeed,Spade and ATXhybrid all have brought up good valid points...yes B-series are in "vouge" right now,but what about the D-series who look at it and say hmm let see what you can really do,its kinda like therapy....only cheaper .
Yeah if we wanted cheap fast ways we probably would drive the fox platform ( I know I built a 79 Fairmont with a 351W/C4 tranny/355 8.8 rear....can you say weeeeee..i miss that car)....but I degress.

Thanks guys for the info and please keep it coming....I'm new to Hondas

Pistons from a B-motor won't fit in a D-motor. Even if both are 1.6L, the bore and storke are totally different. A D-motor bore is 59mm (I think), B is 81mm. The D-motors CAN use LS rods though.

He said o bore it out to make it fit. I don't know how big you can go, but getting some high compression forged pistons would probably cost less than boring it out.

i don't think you want to bore out a d series more than 76mm.

76 mm is only 1 mm over. and yes should not overbore more than 76mm on "stock sleeves"

to bore to like 78-79 you would definately need to have sleeves.
