Default Strange howl under hood

When my engine is running anywhere under 1500 RPM or so (either moving or in neutral) I hear a strange high-pitched howling coming from under the hood. It will go away if I give it the slightest touch of gas, but comes back when the RPM drops back down. It sounds as if it may be coming from the alternator, but I'm not 100% sure. As I've not noticed any electrical performance degradation, I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this noise and might be able to shed some light on the cause.

Thanks!

what performane mods do you have? my friend has the same symptoms - we think it's his CAI because he has it still tapped from his nitrous kit.

Sounds like an accessories' bearing is going. Do you have access to an automotive stethoscope? If not use a hose to listen closely and try to pin point where its coming from. And yes this a common complaint before an alternator fails, but there are other things it can be, find it first.

I had a similar noise from an alternater belt that was to tight and my brother had something like that coming from a timing belt that was to tight, so I would check the tension of your belts

Back from the dead! FWIW, the howling noise was caused by the cheapo vac line I used to connect the PCV valve to my Skunk2 intake manifold. A small section of it had collapsed (the tubing walls were pretty thin) causing a pinch -- the air was making the sound. I fashioned a better line out of OEM bits and it's good as new.
