current status of the suspension; urethane bushings everywhere, stock antisways, upper strut bars. replaced all balljoints with new, replaced the rack end bushing in the steering rack. zero toe out up front, -2.5 camber front, 1.8 caster front, little toe in back (?) -2.8 camber back, alignment done yesterday, brand new tyres, 15" wheels, little too much of offset (38). i know the camber is a bit much, but the tyre wear is not too bad.
problem as follows. the steering rack had a lot of play and knocking before i replaced the rack end bushing, less play after, i tightened the adjustment bolt on the rack, all play and knocking disappreard. the steering is now a bit too stiff. but the main concern is here, the car drifts at high speeds, when making big sweeping turns the steering does not want to return to zero. In a turn, the car has a tendency to continue the turn even without any input to the steering, more so, the radius decreases and if i don't correct, it eventually oversteers, bringing the steering to a full lock. the only way i can describe it is to use an analogy, it is if you were to stand on a ball, you'd tend to go either way falling off it, but to remain on the it constant correction and balancing requires. after a long drive my wrists are in agony, as i have to fight with the car.
i presume the wheel offset might have to do something with it, but i doubt it, the wheels were on a different car with no adverse effects. my other suspicion is the steering rack itself, but i had essencially rebuilt it. now i can increase my caster, and i will replace my tie rods and the front CM with and aftermarket one (jimfab) soon, but i would like opinions about this, please.
