Starter
i think my starter is going out...its hard as hell to crank and you can hear it click when i push in the clutch...sounds like its the starter..oh well..i have a b18c1 i just want to know are all b series manual hydro tranny starters compatiable
Yeah, any starter from another b series will work. Have you checked the battery? Not just checking the voltage, but testing the load. I thought my starter was going bad too. I swapped in another starter and the same. I then moved onto the grounds. Same thing. It would crank, but it would take a hell of a long time to start. I finally went to test the battery to see if its voltage would hold with a load. In the end, it was the battery, it had a few bad cells.
There will be a surface charge on the battery. It will read that it has a fine voltage, but when you try to start the car the bad cell isn't putting any juice out so your voltage drops. Just take the batterty out and have is tested at autozone, kragen. or pep boys. Have them do a load test.
Does it crank fast or slow??..
Fast crank means everything should be fine with your Starter.. I'd check for something else..
Slow crank means that there's not enough amperage getting to the Starter.. It could be a sulfating battery or pitted plunger disc in the Starter Solenoid..
If I were to diagnose this.. I'd check the voltage at the B Terminal on the Starter while cranking. And after doing that, I'd check the Voltage at the M Terminal while cranking.. You should see little or no voltage drop.. Anything more than .5V means that you've got excessive resistance in the high current switch.. You can replace the Solenoid or take it apart and clean the plunger's disc..
Questions, just shoot.. Good Luck..
