Default stand-alone engine management system?

this is probaly a stupid question but im going to ask it anywas beacuse its the only way im going to learn, what is a stand-alone engine management system or stand-alone fuel management system and what are the advanteges of them, i kinda have an idea of what it is but im not sure so if u guys could help me out that would be nice

basically it's replacing all the stock engine control systems with an aftermarket unit. So, instead of having the stock honda ecu running the motors fuel injection and ignition, you'll have another system such a MOTEC, or SDS. The downside is mainly the fact that you have to wire it all in. But the upside is that you have full control over the engine, and you don't have to fuss with systems like the apex'i afc and other piggy back units. Another downside is also that the stand alone systems are very expensive, from $1200 give or take to as high as you want.

Go to http://www.aempower.com and look at there ems system. I hear that they are the best.(Even better than hondadata.)
