what is the difference between progressive springs and linear rate springs? what does each one mean? thanks

Linear springs have about the same 'resistance' while they compress, whereas progressive springs have increasing resistance the further they compress.
IMO, linear springs have a more predicible feel to them, but progressive springs have their advantages as well. Lowering springs for example: the springs can have a softer feel initially, but if you push them they stiffen up.
BTW, you should ask these questions in the competion forum. Those guys have a lot more suspension knowledge than i do
