Default Splicing wires for the ECU...impossible?

All,

Got a project facing me that I'm not looking forward to. My Mom's 95 GS-R got broken into, and the bastards took the ECU. To add insult to injury, they cut the wiring. Well, I found an ECU...now I have to wire the thing up.

I have some stubs from the wiring harness - basically the connectors into the ECU, and about 2 feet of wire. What troubles me is that there are wires that are the same color. In particular there are green-with-silver-marks and red-with-silver-marks wires in my stub harness.

Is this an impossible project? I've scoured the FSM and can't find anything real helpful in there. Same with Google. So if anyone has wisdom...let me know.

KARL! are you in the TECH FORUM?
I thought you never ventured out of RR/AutoX!!

The easiest thing to do (not the fastest..) is to get a new harness. the insurance will cover it. of course then you have to go through the hassle...

As for the wiring, im not sure but somebody WILL know. I never liked dealing with wiring..

I rarely do (haven't hit the Integra forum in over a year I think). But we must be good citizens and post stuff in the right place...

Anyway...Mom cancelled the comprehensive insurance on her car several months ago, so she's stuck. And the harness from the dealer...are you ready for this?? $1070. Umm...NO.

Hell, I think they would have totalled the car had it been covered. Window + seats + wiring + ECU probably equals 50% of the value of a 95 GS-R with chitty paint.

In any event...if there's someone who can tell me if this is possible, I'd love to hear from you. I do know how to solder...I just don't want to fry the ECU in the process of connecting wires.

The only thing i can think of is get yourself a Helms manual, i know mine for 92+civics has a complete wire schematic for wires going into the ECU. That would probably be your best bet.

It is very possible. You just have to be very careful.

In addition to the normal reg with green stripes, you will notice some of the wires have silver or white bands on them. In paterns of 1 and 2 and 3 and maybe more.

I would honestly contact a wrecking yard and get a new harness. It will be way cheaper then a grand and will save you days of work and give you peice of mind.

Contact Kenji on this board as he can always get harnesses for cheaper then we would if we went to the wrecking yard.

I'll pay closer attention to the spacing of the silver bands. Great tip.

Tony, I'll hit up Kenji and see what I can find. I'd love to avoid the hassle of rewiring the whole car though - the FSM leads me to believe that a rewire will be a giant PITA.

Anyone else with suggestions, lay 'em on me.

It's not a very hard task man. You need a GSR helms for wire colors, soldering equipment, heat shrink tubing, and a little bit of time.

Pick up a one handed automatic wire stripper for $12 from Sears. It'll save you gobs of time.

Good luck.

Yeah I agree... its not that big of a deal... I'd say its almost easier then finding a replacement harness, disasembling the dash and replacing the existing harness.

Just take your time (you'll spend a day doing it probably).

Default It runs!!

It runs!!! The fix was being very careful with what wires went to what port on the ECU. I also paid special attention to the arrangement of the wires on my "replacement harness" (really just a stub) versus the installed harness.

Honda did an outstanding job of marking the wires. If you pay close attention to the little silver hash marks on the several same-colored wires, you'll notice a difference.

I made these connections with twist-on connectors just in case I got it wrong and had to re-do it, so this week I'll solder those and hear-shrink the junctions. It did take most of the day but damn was it a good sound to hear the engine fire with no CELs.

OK...back to RR/AX I go.

Thanks all.

I'm not sure I understand the question. So let me describe what I was working with.

- 1995 GS-R with no ECU, wires clipped near where they attach to the ECU
- Wiring from wrecked GS-R, 2+ feet of it, including the connectors for the ECU
- Pinout guides from hybrid
- FSM
-

I used the "known-good" wiring stub as a template, looked at how its wires were routed, and basically did the same with the wires in the car.

Not sure if that helps...but like I said, I'm not sure what youre asking.

They are held inside the plastic plug by a contact. You need to find some old plugs and remove the wires from them. The contacts are crimped on the wires.

Ah, OK, I think Inlinefour cleared this up for us.

I didn't use anything. A friend donated the "to the ECU" piece of the harness (wiring plus plugs) for the cause. So I ended up with the ends that plug into the ECU, and a couple feet of wire behind that.

(BTW...thanks Drew )
