I was reading Super Street July 2005. Article about installing a Limited Slip diff. I realized I had not transferred the speedometer gear from my LS tranny differential. I went to pull the gear off of my old diff. Huh??
The gear is not moving. Are there trannies where the speedometer gear comes away from the diff housing? Anyone know where I can get a speedometer gear parted out?? Are the B18 speedometer gears all the same diameter?

Should I put my head on the railroad tracks and wait for the double "E"??

 

i have the same problem with my trand ive got a b16a2 trans and a 90 ls trans that im trying to get at least one of the gears off but i cant so if you find out how to do it let me know

 

I followed a good write - up here under tranny reconditioning. Step by step . Also check the other forums for picture stories under reconditioning. I also used the repair manual chapters.

the speedometer gear is real easy to remove. You just need to heat it up with a torch. It took me like 5 min with a cutting torch

 

OK, I'm going to try to pop it with heat. Then I will go to plan #2 - machine shop. Then I will go to plan #3 - new gear.

 

Is this Luo?? Hi, I'm still trying my tranny. I totalled my little EF but I lived. It took a long time to save for limited slip diff. because I had to buy another car. Same LS tranny with the small diameter synchro springs. Haha!!
I'm going to try to heat treat this old diff to see if the speed gear comes off. If not I will send a message.

 

just heat it until it starts glowing and take needle nose pliers and take it off. simple

OK. removed and placed on to new OBX limited slip differential. Bearing gap still in spec at the passenger side seal. Synchros and gears all re-assembled. Used honda-bond on the casing and bolted. Counter shaft bolt was an easy 18 ft lbs? Wow, seemed like a ton extracting that bolt. Snap ring on counter shaft surprisingly easy to slip around the counter shaft bearing.
I need to find a reverse light switch and install the clutch throwout bearing. Then it will be completed.
Not bad for an 8 month operation?? haha. I wonder now if I could have saved $1400 for a rebuilt LSD LS tranny in 8 months?? NAHHH!!!! Look how long it took for me to save for an OBX LSD at $400??? Haha. Such fun. The shafts were soaking in oil for the last 7 months just waiting for the LSD purchase!!!!!! Thanks to all who helped with the speedometer gear.

 

thats exatly what i did but my c clip for the counter shaft wont go on all the way i dont know why, but i spent 1600 with conversion mounts
