Spedometer is Still not working.

Today I took off the intake and water hoses and got to what I believed was the VSS. Looked in order.
So my dad gets home, he is a mechanic and he told me their is a small octagonal metal rod about 1" in length that fits inside one of the hoses and its a "Key way"
He insists the problem is mechanical and not electrical.
I am hesitant to listen to my dad when working on my car. I dont know why.
I have the small 1" octagonal rod sitting inside my ash tray. It came off my car when I installed my clutch.
Is this the problem? Have you guys heard or know of this "Key Way"

the vss is located on the tranny with one 12 mm maybe 10.pull that out.the last time i checked youcouldn't take them apart but imay be wrong.if that little rod isn't in there with the little key way, then no your speedometer will not work.
