someone please help...cel 22
i got a 91 civic hatch with a jdm b16 swap/pr3 ecu...so ill be drivin on the freeway in fifth aand if i downshift it and get on it a couple times it throws out the cel 22...it doesnt do it if i make drag runs so im confused...what it does do when the light comes on is: engine runs funky...revs very slowly...wont go over 7,000 rpm..usually pulls hard till about 8,000...as soon as i turn it off and let it chill for a like only two minutes, then turn it back on its fine again..so im like wtf...the guy who i bought it from says that its a vtec code for oil pressure but didnt exactly know what the deal was..he said he encountered it as well..and it didnt start doin it till he installed the vafc(would that even have anything to do with it?)...i changed the oil and oil filter today just to see if it might make a difference..i dont know what kind he was using but i put in 20w-50..the light did not come on after i changed the oil..but i also did not drive it hard..i just dont want something to get majorly f'ed up in a car i just got last saturday..if anyone has any suggestions or has dealt with anything like this before..please help me out..ANY advice will be appreciated..thanks.

It's a VTEC Pressure Switch code and it usually comes on due to insufficient oil pressure. Ideally, B series motors should be running 5w30 motor oil, but since summer's almost here I don't believe you'll have problems. Drive it hard a couple of times and see if the problem persists. If it does, then you may be investing in a new oil pump here in the very near future.

22 is the vtec pressure switch. Here are the causes i've been told/noticed....I have also had those problems recently.
*Too much/little oil in car
*Clogged Vtec solenoid gaskets/filter. Change or clean them to resolve.
*Vtec wiring, possibly a short or splice somewhere.
*Improper tuning of Vafc/Sfc. Happens when VTM wire is not connected.
LMK if I can be of anymore help. I'm local to you if you need to show me in person bro.

i dont think its the amount of oil..im starting to think that it has to do with the vafc installation..the guy who i bought the car from said that he did the installation himself ..he also said that it never started to do this until he installed the vafc..so im assuming its faulty work...now i got this damn cel 14 going off..i was told that it is for the iacv...i dont even know what to look for...but hey if ur around the area..that would be cool if u could come show me whats goin on cuz im new to B series motors and i really dont know what im lookin for..thanks.

you bought a car w/ a swap.. be realistic about it...these things happen...
you said its your first swapped car that you own ( congrats) - just check the wiring from the vafc- it could be as little as a connect thats "loose" or a ground thats come loose as well.....its really no big problem~ when you have piston to valve contact or blow a hole in your block..then, " HOUSTON, WE HAVE PROBLEMS"..lol !!!......
anyways- if youve noticed your code comes on ONLY when you gear down, for the meantime- DONT DROP GEARS !!... try to trouble shoot your problem. either way, let us know whats going on. My boy beakers ( from BSERIES) is a wiring genius- pm him for help as well...... good luck bro- james///

wow, looks like this is getting a bit more serious.
As far as the VAFC, try not to mess with the settings. If you did at all, there could be problems that stem from the adjustments you made. Take a good look at the wires near the ECU and look for open cuts in the wire and such. Also, look under the hood and check the wires that connect into the Vtec pressure switch itself. I had my cel 22 go off because the wires were about to snap off and weren't making sufficient contact.
Change the Oil. i DID THE SAME THING and ran 20w50. The car felt AWESOME for the 3 days I had it in, but the viscosity isn't the best for the engine and the VTEC system.
Other than that, hit me up on AIM and maybe we can meet up real quick. Sorry I couldn't help today. Moms day festivities got me stuck. But I'll do what i can. Any new discoveries??

i understand that it is a swapped car and all..and maybe i just dont know enough about B series motors..i havent even touched the vafc just for the fact that i dont know much about it...and yes it was the THIRD day when the cel 22 came on..yes i did get on it that day..but since then i have NOT even gone above 5,000 rpm...the cel 14 came on when i was just cruisin at like 35 mph in third gear..if ur willing to take the car back thats fine...u want to deduct sum cash for the new iacv needed thats fine too...honestly what it is was i was excited about buyin a pretty dope car..and just a few days after i get it **** starts to go wrong...what would u do if u were in my position??? im not trying to be a dick i just want to resolve this as easily and peacefully as possible...i cant even enjoy my new car
you know i work for honda, if you need a part, i always told you, i would give you my employee price.
i also offered to help fix anything that you need.
i PERSONALLY have never had a problem, and if i did , it was a easy fix...
(as your problems seem to be)
that is all i can do is offer my help.

First of all, I have had a similar problem and I can almost guarantee that it is a problem with your VAFC wiring. I think for some reason, on some cars, the VTM signal craps out sometimes even if the VAFC is wired right... I don't get it. I am now running Crome (makes custom programs for your chipped ECU) so I just turned that sensor off although that is not the ideal solution but I have had three wiring pros look at it and none of them could find the problem. My problem was almost identical but it would throw code 22 whenever I got close to redline in third or fourth.
But I have to comment on your deal with Streetwerks. You tell him you weren't driving the car hard but:

that sounds like drivin it hard to me. It's not gonna give the guy much motivation to help you out if you are obviously bullshitting about how you've been driving the car. I help out at my buddy's shop and people try to do that all the time - something breaks and they come back like "I never took it over 5 thousand rpm!". Look man, we've all had a new car/swap/turbo/whatever and we know what its like. Don't try to tell him you didn't smash on that **** as soon as you got it. It's just disrespectful to him.
Anyway you should be greatful he has made any effort to help you out at all. Used cars are sold "as is" and he has no obligation to do anything. The fact that he is helping just shows that he's being cool about it.

i did smash on it when i first got it..i said i did..i never bounced off the rev limiter..or held the gears for too long..after the cel 22 came on i changed the oil ..after that happened it kinda tripped me out and i didnt wanna try to **** it up any more...and im serious when i say that after i changed the oil i didnt push it again..ive been more concerned about just keepin it goin..and i hold nothin against joe personally hes a cool guy..i just dont think this is the right car for me..if i want a swap i think i should start with a stock one...until then..thanks to the people who offered sum help ..

hey man, im offering my help....... you should take it.
change the oil to 5/20 or 10/30.
and if it needs a IACV valve, i can get one through my work, and even put it on the car for you..... i dont have a problem with that.

dude when he sold you the car did he tell you their was a return policy? once you buy a car its yours. you shoulda thought about it a little more I guess.
anyway I don't know why you are stressin so hard about it. modified cars have problems. thats the way it is. its a ****** check light its not a big deal its not even on all the time. I already told you its a wiring problem. just take it to a good shop and have them fix it. should cost less than 100 bucks. not bad considering he gave you a really good price on the car...

NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT!!!!!!
that front bumper filler was just bought from honda and installed by a coworker while i was on the clock, if it was bent, thats NEWS TO ME!
i still have the body kit that was on it, and you can see, its still perfect... i didnt like the kit, and wanted a stock looking car...... so that is total BULLSHIT!!!!
the car has been paid..... i just paid in JAN of 05.... it is GOOD untill 06....
now, if it hasnt been smogged since 04, of course the TEMP TAGS arent going to be good unless it gets smogged or reged in the new owners name.
i never had a problem with any of the gears!!!!!! you went on a ride with me, did it have a problem?
youve had this car for over a week, and it sounds like youve beat it to death....
TWO CHECK ENGINES and TRANNY TROUBLE? this car worked fine when i had it...
will you admit that when i took you for a ride, it ran PERFECTLY???????????
i'm losing my patience, and dont even want to help you anymore.
i will HELP in anyway i can, as long as youre polite and patient.

it ran fine when we went for a ride..and u told me urself uve had the cel 22 occur when u downshifted to fourth and got on it...thats the only time it ever came on...i told u i didnt drive it hard after that and the problem hasnt occured since...what i have to deal with is the cel 14 thats on all the time...i dont know why ur takin it so badly..im just heated cuz there are certain things that werent mentioned before i bought the car...im not sayin the parts u sold me werent worth the money..its just i need this car for transportation and its like takin a risk driving this thing every day. i dont know how u can say that its paid for till 06 since i got a ticket for it not being registered yesterday
look at the paper work with my EX GFs name on it....
look at when we went to the DMV. the reason you got a ticket is because you need a temporary operating permit untill you get a test only.
that car is reliable.... i never HAD a code 14, and thats an easy fix, ask me, i'll get you the part.
i drove it every day to and from work, and on the weekends i drove from anaheim to san diego to my apartment down there.
the reason im heated is because you made it sound like i'm not willing to help you.

i can put the iacv valve on if you want.....
it doesnt take much to be polite and ASK.
