SOHC non-VTEC Mini-Me...problems

the set-up:
89/91 Civic STD shortblock
89/91 Civic Si head/intake manifold/ECU/distributor/resistor box

When we tried to start the car, smoke started to blow out the intake manifold. I couldn't see exactly where, but pretty sure it's just a gasket to be replaced. BUt the car didn't not start either.

The wiring is whats on my mind.

Any ideas or options that open a door to get it running would be very much appreciated. Thanks HTer's.

Just curious. Wasn't the STD the 8-valve headed engine? Did the pistons have 4 valve reliefs of 2?

It is a 16 valve.

It's still not running either. So we put all the stock parts back on and it still won't start. Sparks and smoke come out from the intake manifold, plus it smells like gas now every time we turn the engine over.
