SMS Cat Problems..............
I got the cat from SMS because it came highly recommended. I put it in, worked great for a day... Then a slight rattle started coming from the cat. Now 4 days later, the whole cat sounds like it's going to blow up.
I've heard i you run rich with these cats, the filliment blows out. But the thing is, I wasn't running rich. I was actually running 3% lean across the board.
Anyone else have this problem?

Doubt 3% lean would melt metal. There is no backpressure since it's 2.5" collector back. Anyway, I've heard about lots of problems with these. SMS makes good stuff, I just want things set straight and to get another working cat... and it would be nice to know why these keep crapping out.
You're not going to break down the catalyst material in 5 days unless you've got some serious problems.
It's most likely just the welds on the heatshield. Probably guaranteed by SMS, as I believe they reweld the ones that go through them to try and prevent that from happening.
But why are you asking us? Call SMS or Carsound.

Running lean can be a problem if you are having any misfires, since the catalyst will "burn" the mixture in the cat, causing crazy-high temps, which will cook the ceramics. In addition, if this cat does not have a heat shield, then driving through water will cause it to crack and rattle around inside its metal casing.
