Smog help (ive searched)
Ive read till my eyes cant see straight on all the searches.
I am running a PR3 ecu on a B16 with the head milled 20thou. The O2's are new, as well as plugs and oil.
I passed all the sniffer tests here in BC except the HC at idle.
Does the PR3 always run super rich? I had a wideband on it and set my fuel pressure to 29 psi at idle (stock is 28-30 i believe) and VAFC settings to zero. The w/b was reading a/f at 12's-13's. Very rich.
Now to get me through the test, I had set the VAFC to -13% at 1000rpm and -18% from 2000-4000rpm. These rpms on the narrow band low cam setting cover all of the rpm range that the driving portion cover. I got these settings the other day after duplicating the test on a long flat road. They do a 30 second drive in second gear at 40 kph. In my car that equals about 3500rpm. The wideband was reading mid 15-low 16:1 a/f ratio with the above settings. Would have been perfect.
I took the test and failed the HC at idle. Everything else was great. CO at idle was quite low as well. My a/f going through the test with the above settings was now at 19:1 though!! Why?
That I can't figure out. Why is the same settings on the VAFC getting such drastically different readings?
I am trying another good distributor to eliminate the possibility of misfire leading to unburnt fuel, but other than that, I am lost.
Help please. My insurance runs out wednesday night and need to get this passed.

Did you see if your HC consistently goes up and down at idle? If so then it's possibly your cat. It could be good at cruise, but suck *** at idle. Hope this helps a bit...
HC at idle drops from 670ppm at the start down to 480ish ppm after 30 seconds. It declines at a smooth rate.
I have been running rich for some time now, so more than likely the cat is shot now anyways. I am trying to get under 324ppm. I had an average of 517ppm. I have read that too lean of a mixture causes a dramatic rise in HC. I can attribute my high numbers to that. I just can't figure out why the same readings on the vafc on two different days can create such different a/f readings.
???
I have recieved my other distributor tonight and I will post up if it makes a difference at all.
