Default single cam timing problem...

okay first.... it's a frankenstien. Single cam ZC Head, D15b7 Block, 88 Lx Tranny with DPFI. i set my number one to TDC and set my cam to the correct position. But it's an AEM tru-time and i don't think its right. so when i hit around 5500-6000 RPM's it cuts out.
i tryed tinkering with the ignition timing and it did nothing. i'm thinkning the valve timing is off. should i advance it or retard it? Thanks in Advance =]
