Shifter and linkage question.
At the base of the shifter, where the shifter lever bolts into the main linkage bar (the one that actually switches the gears) does it have to be VERY tight around the shifter base, or just sorta tight. I know you can add washers to make the space smaller. My issue is that I DONT want any freeplay, but I dont want the shifter to bind.
As it sits, the shift lever was hammered into place. It looks to be straight, and it is very tight in the main linkage bracket. Im happy with it as it sits, but if its going to cause a problem, ill have to bend it around to make it fit looser. Are there supposed to be washers on either side of the shift levers base?
Thanks, I know this question in a bit hard to visualize.

I put my short shifter plus bushings in and it was tight, but then gradually loosened up. I just thought it need some adjusting, so i put a washer in. It was so tight i almost could't get the washer in. When I first drove it after that, I almost could't change gears, then it loosend gradually and it's back to where it was before the washer. I dunno
well, I can tighten it all the way and its only a fraction more difficult to move than if it was all the way loose. If it is all the way loose, it moves without any resistance whatsoever.
I guess its supposed to be 16lbs of force on the bolt that goes through the shifter, correct?
