Recently I have noticed some play in my shifter. 1st to 2nd is fine but when shifting from 2nd to 3rd, I can hear a clicking from what sounds like the shifter area. There also is significant play within 3rd gear itself. I can move the shifter back towards 4th a considerable bit without it disengaging from 3rd gear.

I ordered the Energy Shifter bushing set that includes the transmission bushing along with the shifter bushing itself.

I believe that the stock bushing is underneath the vehicle. Could this be causing the play in 3rd gear along with the associated clicking sound?

I know it sounds like a stupid issue but I have been putting up with it for quite some time and it is starting to aggravate me.. Any comments or feedback is appreciated!

The bushings have nothing to do with the play and you just wasted your money like I did.
ES shifter bushings do NOTHING!

My shifter has play too, thats why I got them. I got sick of the play.

Perhaps a new short shifter is needed. I bought the car with a no name. Could it be the synchros in the transmission?

ok, I have a b16 swap. I have a no name short shifter with all new es shifter bushings and tranny bushing. got them free so I wasnt complaining. what I noticed is I still have all the slop I had before.

its not a foward backward slop its a left to right slop. kinda like having a bolt that is too small inplace of your bitch pin.

the only thing I can come up with is the ball of the shifter is worn down causing it to wiggle.

can anyone correct me if im wrong? other wise im just gonna throw in a oem gsr duel bend

replace parts #4 (need 2), #5 (need 2), and #24 (need 4) in this link:

shows for a civic, but it gives you an idea to what needs replaced for the left to right slop. they are the o-rings and plastic bushings that hold the collar inside the end of the shifter that the bolt goes thru. they usually get worn out, broken, or lost.

as far as 00civicsiboy's problem, it sounds more like a tranny issue or perhaps just the wrong shift linkage on there.

I have done that already, I even put washers as spacers on either side of the shifter at the bottom, the bottom is tight and offers no side to side movement. its coming from the ball I believe.

Are you talking about the bearings inside the shifter? Those get worn out and need to be replaced to stop the play when the car is in gear?

not bearings, but rather o-rings and spacers. the bolt that goes thru the bottom of the shifter goes thru a metal spacer that has 4 rubber o-rings around it so that it sits snugly inside the end of the shifter. it also has plastic spacers on each end of the metal spacer to make it fit tight in the end of the shift linkage.

And if it helps, my car originally had a b16 in it. We now have an lsvtec in it and the problem was still apparent when the b16 was in it...

it wouldn't hurt, but i doubt that it would fix your problem. as the part description implies, it is just a "seat" for the ball of the shifter. unless if it is completely missing, then it dosen't really get worn out. not saying that it is impossible for it to be worn out and needing replaced, but i'd look elsewhere.

i'm assuming that you have already checked underneath the car to make sure all bolts are tight?

Last time I was under the car I checked but this was many months ago. I was trying to figure out the problem today and it only has symptoms when shifting into 3rd or while I am in 3rd gear. When I am in 3rd gear it almost feels like there is nothing stopping the shifter from moving until gets to the point where it will pop out of gear. I am thinking that the actual bushing on the shift fork itself perhaps is worn down.

The chasis has around 130k miles on it and the previous owner I have found out had no clue what he was doing when he was wrenchin on the car himself. I guess that next step would be to simply buy that bushing that is on the shifter itself.

I used the tutorial above and it looks like I will need around 10 parts correct? Or simply buy a whole new short shifter that included a bearing.
