is it possible if i just use a shift lite to glow to tell me when to shift , without using the tach (because its too ricy...)...if this is possible, fill me in ! haha....thanks
Yes, it is possible.
If your going with an Auto Meter light and you wnat the smallest light: Buy the mini-shift light and a rpm activated module. The module uses rpm pills to tell the light when to flash.
Look in any Jeg's catalog, the rpm module is listed right with the separate shift lights. I think the module is around $50-60 dollars.
Otherwise Autometer has a larger light that has the rpm module and pill socket built into it.

there are three wires, power, ground, and the one that reads the rpm. Its a wire under the hood, I forget the exact color, I believe its blue with a yellow stripe. Can somebody confirm this? Thats how mine is setup, I'll check when I get home from work.
usually its just blue. You can splice in near the distributor connector or there is a service connector near te drivers side engine harness connectors. this connector only has one wire (blue) and it will be covered with a rubber cap.
