Probably something's loose (doh...)

Put the car up on solid ramps or stands & get underneath. Have someone wiggle the shift lever while you watch. The shift linkage is like a steel tube from the shifter to the tranny. You need to figure out WHERE the looseness is located before you can figure out what to tighten or replace...

#20 bolt along with all those spacers on the bottom of the shift lever? You should be able to feel the looseness located at that end of the shift rod (#13).

Is that some kind of U-joint at the front end of #13? Maybe that's loose. Maybe even the aft end of #14 where it's in a bracket bolted to the floorpan. Any of these things can be loose.

The ball & socket with all those stacked-up parts? Same deal, you gotta feel for where the looseness is located and deal with it.

OK, #14 is mounted solidly like it's supposed to be.

But #13 is supposed to move along with the shift lever, so if it's in neutral you SHOULD be able to move it around some. If someone holds the shift lever tight, maybe you can feel whether it's the front vs. back end of #13 that's loose. Eventually you'd like to find one part of the linkage that's loosely connected to the next part so you feel the parts move against each other.

If you can't find something like that, you'll have to worry about it being an internal problem in the tranny.

We can't see it from here.

i had a similar problem i couldnt get my linkage apart from tha bar that comes out of the transmission so i took the tranny down and dissasembled it to find that the two parts that change the gears and really loose and was makking the sleeves on the main and countershaft sag and not go into gear right so i am trying to find the parts right now to replace them.

I agree, most likely worn shifter bushings.

The others should try to rule out external linkage problems before they panic about their trannys.

Do you (or a previous owner) rest your hand on the shifter while driving?
