Shift Fork Wear
Got a question for you guys. Its my first time with tranny work. Take a look at my shift fork and tell me if this is wear or if this is how they are cast. Because all of my shift are the same in the wear, and there is a little ridge if you look at the top view (last pic) that is right where the wear pattern is:
Is this normal wear?
Is this normal wear?
the part you want to try to measure is where the RED arrows are. Sometimes you will get a round arch wear mark with the BLUE arrows as well. as I stated before if you didnt have any problems shifting gears then you are probably fine(especially if the synchros arent worn too bad). if anything it might be a bit less crisp of a shift with worn forks.

I invited them all
- Will have measurments tommorow, don't have calipers right now.
And oh, I did have some shifting issues (no reverse gear and nothcy 3rd). 5th/Reverse Syncro Sleeve is completly gone for sure.

this dude helped me out a lot on my first tranny rebuild.
if you cant hit reverse, thats definitely related to teh 5/rev synchro. mine were pretty chewed as well but not bad enoughh to worry about right now. my main issues were 3/4 syncho set and 4th gear (which I didnt even replace at this point because I dont really have any shifting problems other than an occasional rough 4th gear shift, so I DID replace 4th gear itself bc the dog teeth were pretty gnawed up), and the mainshaft clutch housing bearing. then some slight issues with the new CS/FD fitment which I STILL havent heard back on from the manufactuer

My problem is the 5th/reverse syncro sleeve teeth, they're all chewed up and only let the gear inside the sleeve slide one way (5th) and not the other way into reverse. I'll have some pics tommorow of it for comic relief.
Also forgot to mention that a few bearings have some ridiculous play.
I chose to rebuild the tranny with:
New Bearings/Seals
Gear Speed Carbon Coated Syncros
JDM 4.7 FD
+ All the misc broken parts, so far:
5th Gear (some teeth are chipped)
5th/Reverse Syncro Sleeve

If you want to get some more pics, get some pictures of this stuff.
so we can see the condition of the dog teeth and part of the synchros:

The more pictures you take and post, the more we can help you

Good question...
Helms recomends that if you need to replace the Sleeve that you also replace the hub gear. Any truth to this?

lol, I don't bother with that stuff. I check to make sure it fits and slide correctly and then slap it together.
if you order a sleeve kit, it will come with the hub though. you can't order JUST a sleeve.

damn neo that 5/R looks beat lol you could try to dremmel the teeth some to reshape them and see if that helps if you dont want to buy the full 5/R set right now. I was going to do that with mine but decided not to since I was still able to shift without much problem prior to removing the trans.

yup, which is such a ball breaker because it forces you to spend almost $200 lol. I only needed a 4th gear and the brass synchros for 3rd and 4th, the sleeve and hub are ok. Gearspeed will sell individual parts of the "sleeve set" I believe but they are on back order for most parts until atleast December. So I just replaced 4th gear with a B16 4th gear (cheaper than "Acura" 4th gear, same size/dimensions and ratios) and slapped it back together for now.
On another note, I noticed many of my bearings had play as well. Through researching it appears most ppl say the same thing and that its actually normal for the bearing races to have a lot of play. Especially the large mainshaft bearing on top. I can confirm this as I decided to replace that bearing anyway and the new one had just as much play. The good thing about that is that you can look inside the race and check for irregular wear. The two bearings at the top of the countershaft also have a bit of play. I highly suggest cleaning the **** out of those bearings with parts cleaner, and then put some clean fluid on them, and spin them. If they arent smooth or feel lumpy/notchy/gritty, get rid of them. The needle bearings are hardest to inspect and test because they have so much play and are loud as fawk.

The fork is actually in pretty good condition from the angle of the picture. Bad forks will have very deep grooves on the ends. The sleeve is REALLY bad. Swap it out with an OEM sleeve set(comes with center hub, sleeve and corresponding synchros) and make sure the 5th gear is good and you are set. Check the bearings as RTW DC2R stated as well. If you have the cash...opt to change the bearings just to be on the safe side if the mileage is up there.
Good Luck!

Man, that sleeve is toast. I've seen shift forks much worse than that.
Mic the shift fork where it contacts the sleeve to push it up or down at the thinnest portion. The service manual should have a minimum spec for the thickness of the shift fork for that area.
