Setting my timing... impossible
So it's been about a month since I drove my CRX in an autocross... and subsequently blew up my stock A6, 230k miles. I've had my new mini-me in the car for two weeks now, and I still can't get the damn thing to run normally.
Here's the setup: D16A6 block, Y8 head, PM7 (ZC/A1) pistons, y7 dizzy (same as Y8), OBD1 conversion running on a P28, Y8/Z6 timing belt, stock Y8 cam gear, Z6 manifold/fuel rail, AEM CAI, DC ceramic header, ACT Streetlite flywheel (12 pounds) with HDSS clutch and PP.
I also put in a 4 wire bosch O2 sensor the other day. All my wiring is correct, verified by Rywire. I also have 2 P28s, one is known working, so the ECU is not an issue. I listed all the mods because you might see something that could be contributing to the problem... for example, my DC header was giving me a problem using a 1-wire O2 sensor. You CAN use a 1 wire, if it's close enough to the head, but the DC puts it so far downstream it needs the heater to work right. Of course I never mentioned that to anyone before and it turned out to be a problem.
So... the problem:
The car will only start with the timing way advanced. If I set cam timing to TDC, it will not start with the dizzy in a position where I can bolt it up. If I have a friend hold it turned counter clockwise beyond the mounting points, it starts and idles perfect. I can then turn it back so it bolts up and timing is dead on. The problem is, if I touch the gas it dies like this, and of course the car won't start unless I have my friend holding the dizzy there. So I tried advancing the cam gear one tooth. It worked, but the car was a little sluggish and I could see with the timing light that it was advanced beyond factory spec. I'm a little afraid of running too advanced because of the compression, worried about detonation. So how do I time this damn thing? I know someone is going to say get an adjustable cam gear... I have one in the mail, but it's going to my parents' house 200 miles away. I am going there later today with or without my car. Regardless, I have the timing set correctly without it, so why won't the car start!?
