actually, the JDM S1 has exactly the same gearing as a type r (excluding the type r w/ 4.7 final).
Compared to the JDM S1, the JDM YS1 has a shorter 1st and 5th.

cmon guys i need help on this, wich would be better for a b16? the jdm s1 or the usdm ys1??? i need to know sson cause i can get a great del on the ys1 but i dont want to miss it.
You will always be faster with the shorter geared transmission, which is the ys1. If you already have the s1 though, you won't notice much of a difference since they are very close in gear ratio's, with the ys1 being a little tighter (like someone said earlier). I personally wouldn't go through the trouble if I already had an s1 in good shape in the car. How much are you getting the ys1 for? ****, I would buy it for a back up if it was that cheap. May be you can sell it to me (I only have a y1
).

ok i thought the ys1(ls tranny) had taller gears, but i guess im wrong(good for me) i want a new tranny anyway, i have slight scratches every once in a while. so i can pick up this tranny *cheap* and im a mechanic so instalation in the shop is really easy, so its just about wich one is better to me. thanks guys i'll be gettin the tranny tomorow, o ya and sorry but im keepin it. sell you a s1 with lite grind tho
Ok, what s1/ys1 are you talking about? I was assiuming you were talking about the jdm s1 and the ys1 found in the 92-93 gsr, but there were other ones. Check this chart out. It all depends which one you are talking about. Sorry for the confusion, I just assumed.

the USDM ys1 can come on the 92-93 GSR's but they also put that same "ys1" name on some of the USDM LS trannies too. just like Y80 and S80 for the USDM 94+ integra trannys....(GSR and LS) sometimes the only way you can tell the difference is if you pull the tranny apart or you drive it..... anyways just wanted to help clear things up.
ok sorry for bein so stupid but the smaller ratio means the gear is taller right or is it the other way around? the smaller ratio, the smaller gear??
look at it this way... here are the specs from the 92-92 GSR YS1 tranny
3.307 1st
2.105 2nd
1.458 3rd
1.107 4th
0.880 5th
4.400 FD
see what is happening? think of those numbers and then think of each gear while you are driving. the LOWER the gear ratio #s for each gear, the Longer/ Taller the gears are. obviously it is easier for an engine to pull through 1st gear with its 3.307, then it is to pull through 5th gear with its 0.880.

you are correct. the JDM S1 is a much better trans for an all-motor B16 than the USDM YS1 (LS)
