rust on cylinder walls
i got a ls block that was honed and cleaned then sat in my garage forever and now theres a little bit of rust on one of the cylinder walls. is that all bad? does it need to be rehoned?
only if you can't feel it with your figers, light rust will come off with some cleaning like using a very fine sand paper or someting of that kind. i've had motors sit for years and have little rust all I do is clean it as good as I can so I don't do damage to the rings. now unless it's very bad then you've got problems
If it's rust that you can wipe off with an oil soaked rag and not see any dark pits in the walls then you should be OK. But if you wipe down the rust and see dark pits I would get a light hone to freshen up the walls.
I've never done the sandpaper trick. And honestly I wouldn't touch the insides of a machined cylinder wall with a piece of sandpaper. Wouldn't that disturb the crosshatch patterns on the cylinder walls and possibly cause a low spot. What if he puts too much pressure in one area? The thought of a guy using his hands to scuff up a cylinder wall seems a bit inconsistent to me.....
But like I said I've never tried it it may be as easy as he makes it sound.
