Default Run an external oil cooler, b series

Good day folks,

*do this at your own risk if you screw something up I am not responsible.

I am running an external oil cooler on my b16 turbo and wanted to share the writeup. I don't have pics of the setup on my car but I figure I can do this writeup without that.

Cost:
~
around 120 dollars if you dont upgrade your oil pump or run oil pressure gauge (kind of careless)
-+150 if you upgrade oil pump to high pressure ACL pump
+50-60 if you run an oil pressure gauge (electronic autometer ebay price)
Total 320 if my quick math is right ha ha.

Parts you need:
-Mocal type 180 degree thermostatic plate, can be found here, when the ebay sale link expires, you will see an images below this parts list within the thread of what I picked up.
-AN 10 steel braided lines found here, or where ever you prefer. ~ 15 feet
-Sandwich plate with m20x1.25 thread, any generic ebay one will work.
-10an 10 row oil cooler, a generic brand will work
-ACL high pressure oil pump (this is a good idea to keep oil psi up after doing this)
-Some way to monitor oil pressure, I am using an autometer gauge electric oil psi gauge, run adapter off stock pressure sensor location or off sandwich plate you purchased.
-10an fittings, you will need 4, 2 from the mocal theromstatic plate, 2 from the oil cooler itself, figure out the angle you want
-I believe 25mm deep socket (to install the m20x1.5 sandwich plate bolts)
-Some sort of washer that can go around the m20x1.5 bolt to space bolt out so sandwich plate it secures to block right.

Pictures of parts in case links die:
Mocal thermostat plate:

Parts I purchased to run the cooler, these fittings are great as are the lines no leaks and not a stupid price like Earl's fittings. Honestly I feel like the quality is better. I believe I used a 45 degree angle on what attaches to the mocal plate:

How to do it:

**Do not overtighten m20x1.5 fittings when installing, just make them snug, tighten a little if you see leaks after install, I didn't see any on mine, do not over tighten and break oil filter stud into block**

-The point of the sandwich plate is to space out the mocal thermostat plate so that it can clear the block, otherwise you will run into clearance issues just installing the mocal thermostat like i did with the hard water lines on the block.

-Install the sandwich plate to where the oil filter used to be, my b16 did not have a water/oil cooler setup like b18c's. Lots of people complain that ebay sandwich plates leak. I noticed there is a flaw with them, they need to have a spacer mounted as pictured below to space the bolt out from the threaded stud in the block to allow the sandwich plate to fit tightly and prevent leaks. I went to my local hardware store, got a washer of proper size and ground it down so it didnt interfere with oil flow and cleaned it up and then installed it, this allows the sandwich plate to fit tightly.

-Once the sandwich plate is installed, make your AN lines with the fittings of your choice. I painters tape around the line piece I want to cut several times tightly, then I use a dremel or angle grinder to cut through the hose, then I shove the hose into the an fitting all the way till flush with the female side of the fitting then you have to screw down the male side into the female side, use appropriate sized wrenches or adjustables, use painters tape to avoid scratches on the fittings.. or buy the soft tools and waste money. Have fun pinching your skin while doing this ha ha. Once the AN lines are done, thread them onto the mocal sandwich plate I used teflon tape here probably not needed. Now install the mocal sandwich plate with the m20x1.25 stud onto the ebay sandwich plate, allowing the mocal to snug up. Feel free to install your oil filter at this point.

-Run the oil cooler where you decide, please do not have it be upside down, oil coolers should be pointing up or sideways for best flow. There is an oil feed and return line for the thermostat plate, be sure to orient your lines right if running oil cooler sideways, so the hot oil goes to the top of the oil cooler and return goes out the bottom. Here is a helpful youtubeon how the mocal sandwich plate actually works:

-This is about it, be sure to cycle the engine over a couple times before starting, and do check your oil level after the car has come to temperature as the oil will get sucked into the cooler and take some out of the system.

Enjoy your lower temps. My tuner said my civic kept at 180 degrees on the dyno despite dyno tuning on a 100 degree day.

I love it. I mounted one on mine (Same Mocal) about 6 years ago, and a second one on a project one about a year ago, I'll include photos soon. But very good write up. I can validate that it works.
