Default RPMs REV

Ok I'm a noob but I have a serious problem. I have a 1998 Civic LX With I believe a D16y7 engine. Now when I gun it to about 4500 rpm once in a blue moon it will jump to 6000 rpm. Now I know my car doesnt have vtech. Or does it? And why the hell does it rev like that? Is it my transmission? Please help me out here!! THanks

If you have a manual your clutch could be slipping! It happened to me. When I floor it in 1st, 2nd,
or any gear for that matter...once I got to like 5500rpms (Vtec) the rpms would sky rocket, and the car would not go anywhere! Are your symptoms the same? Explain more details.

Actually I have a auto tranny. When I hit 4500 rpms it sky rockets to 6000 rpms for about 2 seconds and then it goes back down and starts to accelerate more. I know it sounds cheesey that I have a auto tranny but anyway.... thats my problem. I thought it was my intake (maybe a clamp was lose) but it wasnt. So do u think my tranny is screwed up? Argggg if it is.. I guess I'll buy a ex tranny. Anyway... I hope you can help me out. THANKS!!

Your transmission may be slipping. Pull the transmission dipstick and inspect the fluid on the stick. Is it nice and red or is it brown and burnt? If it's the latter, you may be in for some expensive repairs.
