Auto Tranny/Shifting Hard
i have a 93 prelude. Its an auto and i used to go thru the gears (as if it were a manual)(4th gen) (1,2,3,4). Now it feels like my tranny shifts hard, i can really feel it shifitng. And right when i start it, it idles then falls like 200 rpms and goes back up 200rpms and goes to normal. And every now and then it will really liek shake. When im at like 2000 rpms and i give it alot of gas, the RPM needle shoots up real fast, and sometimes it takes to like 4000 b4 it'll shift (1st to 2nd). And if im getting on the freeway and i floor it till like 80 it almost redlines b4 each time it shifts (mainly in the ealry gears). Is this normal and im just paranoid, is it not a bad thing, is it a bad sign for future tranny problems? I would love some help i need to knwo if my tranny is screwed or not.
I dont think you have anything to worry about really. unless it shifts really, and I mean really hard. my auto shifts pretty hard on occasion ( Mercury Sable R0cKs Y0!! ) but it's normal, also if it shakes on flats you might have a problem. sometimes I get a shaking rumble going up hills but it's just because the tranny isn't in a good gear, just bliping the gas usually gets it to shift up to where it should be. and when you've got the gas floored it will wait longer to shift, good for passing on the freeway. What I usually do is floor it and then ease off as it reaches the redline (or the highest shift point, which is at about 5k in the sable) that makes it shift alot quicker once its up there and is alot smoother than just keeping it nailed down and letting it do it's thing. then as soon as it shifts floor it again and repeat. just do it slightly, if you pull off too much at speed the engine doesent like it much.
If you really are worried about your transmition take it in to to a shop and have them do a auto tranny checkup/inspeciton thing. costs like 70bucks or something, check for cupons in the newspaper.

I think it's a feel thing. If you've dealt with some domestics, they have a different feel when they shift. I had to get used to my civic... If your fluid is yellow or any other color except red) when you wipe off the dipstick, change it. Also, why do you drive like a manual? I'm just curious. Generally, I prefer to feel a kick when it shifts because I know that the clutchpack is disengaging when it should. I'm not talking about a whiplash kinda thing, just a little punch..
same thing happens to me,i have a 98 lude and my tranny will shift hard and the rpm will shoot up before changing gears (2nd-3rd) but this only happens when I don't warm up my car before i go for the day, once i didnt warm my car up, and when i stuck it in reverse, the whole car juss died out...i change the tranny oil often now but ONLY with honda's tranmission oil, by the way, don't drive your auto like a manual, u will definatly screw it up even more...
any one know how to complety flush the tranny fluid? how much do u think it will cost to flush at honda?
