Default rpm switch as vtec controller?

As the title says, I'm thinking of using an rpm switch to activate/deactivate my vtec solenoid. I found a small company that custom programs rpm switches to have 8 different settings ($50). Anybody have any good, bad, or otherwise luck with this?

I have an H23 w/H22 head. I am just completing the switch....waiting on a couple parts. I thought this might be a good way to bypass buying another ECU (p13).

I like the idea of having an adjustable vtec controller, but would it be better to go with the p13 + controller?
