Rough grinding feel from clutch
i've got a '94 EG2 and i just finished an overhaul on all the gaskets for the head. theres still an idle problem but i think i know what i need to do with that to solve it. my question is about the clutch. i noticed that if i press down on the clutch pedal just lightly about an inch down and hold it there i can feel and hear some kind of noise which sounds like grinding. what's wierd is the clutch pedal when depress i can't really hear it or feel it. other then that the clutch grabs fine and doesn't seem to be going out. i would like opinions on this matter before i start taking off the tranny to look at whats making the sound and feel. oh, and just yesterday i changed the oil in the tranny and it got a little better but still a hint of it still there. when i drive on the freeway over 60MPH i can really here that grinding sound from the cockpit. what do you think it is?
Sounds like a main bearing in the tranny.. last time I had that feeling it was in a jetta and the main bearing was toast in just a couple weeks. You could push it all the way in and felt smooth but just alittle where it just starts to release the pressure plate the peddle would just vibrate at first and then it start to shake up and down.
actually i got it backwards. let me correct it. if i press the clutch down the squeeling noise stops. if i release the clutch the squeeling noise starts again. as for the rough grind feeling. well, it's gone. the oil was black and of a water consistency. thank god i decided to drain it to see if it needed changing. i guess previous owner really didn't take care of the mechanical on this car very well.
so what can cause a squeeling sound inside the tranny when clutch is depress?

Not internal bearings.
Though, it's Not clear from your post if the sound occurs when driving 60 while your foot is off the clutch.</TD></TR></TABLE>
I understand what you are saying and yes that can be it.. that is what I thought on my jetta and when I got the tranny out and the clutch was fine I pulled on the output shaft to find 1-1 1/2 inchs on in and out travel on it. It can be the internal bearings.. drive it till it *****. If you still have one/some gears then its an internal bearing, if you have nothing then its the throw out bearing. I would fix it before it comes to that though.

If it is just squeeling then that is probably the throw out bearing.
