Default rotor screw in distributor

i was wondering what exactly this screw does....is its sole purpose to keep the rotor on the shaft or does it have any direct effect on the ignition system....reason im asking is that today i did aa tune up and when i had the cap off i noticed the screw was missing
apparently ive been missing the screw for sometime, and i dont know if its necessary to have it

Its purpose is to keep the rotor on the shaft. You didnt drive away without it did you?

whys that? its not like the rotor just slides off....its on there tight. this is why im trying to find out if it effects the ignition system at all or if its sole purpose to the hold the rotor on

at 5000 rpm for a long time it could slide enough to not contact the pins anymore...thats why you need it on there.

go get one.
