There is a method to finding what they put in from the factory. It all depends on the motor as to what bearings you replace them with. Most of the time if there has not been a spun bearing ( or any other damage) then going back with OEM specified is the best bet. It is always best to double check by matching up the numbers form rod to crank and crank to block. Its hard to tell sometines by just looking at the side of the bearing. Red look like brown... ect. Just looking at the color is not a good idea. Also when installing always use a dial bore gauge or plasitgauge to verify the that you have the proper oil clearances. This will help out in bearing longjevity.

To find the same bearings that were put into your motor originally you will need to put the alphanumberic code together... For the mains you'll find the alpha tag on the bottom side (B series) of the block (5 letters long), you'll get the numeric part off the crank... With each set you'll have an arrangment which will give you your 5 bearing colors... Same goes for the rods, alpha tag comes off the crank, numbers come off each rod (only OE)... After that I would still atleast plastigauge your clearances as the crank can wear... If you're within spec then you're set, too loose then go up one color to the next thickest bearing and vise versa... If you're working with aftermarket rods I always just start right in the middle with green, plastigauge and swap bearing till you have reached your desired clearance... As PhatOptimo said, the other option is to use a dial-bore gauge and a micrometer... This is actually what I prefer as you can simply calculate out all your bearings before hand, still plastigauging after just to double check... Sorry I really didn't cover anything new, Good Luck

I'd ask first before buying them. I replaced mine with what was in there from the factory since there was no damage to any of the bearings. All oil clearances were within spec.

Damn, I never really thought about that since we just stock each color at the shop. If in fact you do need a different size tell them they gave you the wrong color to begin with j/k, i don't know if that would work but asking always does...
